Damascus Barracks Building Works

Department of Defence

This project for the Department of Defence involved the refurbishment of a large logistics warehouse and office spaces which are of heritage significance and included on the Commonwealth Heritage Register.
The 2000m2 building at Damascus Barracks, originally constructed in 1943, consisted of a unique timber lattice truss structural frame, supported by more than 120 timber hardwood columns. The works for the project included the replacement and upgrade of all footings and foundations to 120 insitu columns, and structural upgrade of all timber framing, in line with original construction materials and processes. The APGC team, devised a methodology to carry out these structure upgrade works, with the structure remaining in place, and without effect to the existing building.
Architecturally, the building was partly re-clad with re-used existing cladding where still serviceable, with the remainder of the building clad in specially run custom sheets to match existing. An internal office was demolished and fully rebuilt, upgraded to current standards and amenities. A HVAC and exhaust system was installed throughout the warehouse.
As part of the works, the entire building required upgrade to physical security to achieve Zone 2 certification.
These works required thorough interface with stakeholders to manage the works in line with the Heritage Management Plan, and Defence and ICT security requirements. All works were photographically recorded before and after of all elements, and formulated into a heritage archive report for inclusion in the handover documentation.
